The Great Pretender

Someone’s sometimes
That’s what I am.
Sometimes  a somebody
But most of the time a nobody.

Someone’s option
That’s what I am
One who would be considered
But  never would be chosen.

Someone’s song
On their playlist.
An old forgotten one
Waiting to be played
Only to wait in vain.

Someone’s companion
When they are lonely.
Someone to talk with
When they are bored.

Someone’s  worn out shirt
Old and tattered
Now stays at the back of the closet.

Someone’s shadow
Always been there
But rarely ever noticed.

Will there be a time
I will be someone’s special?
Will there be a time
Someone chooses me over?
Will there be a time
I will be someone’s favourite?

I want to scream
I want to curse
Why must Someone be cruel?
My thoughts run wild
But I stay still

So whenever they ask me “How are you?”
I bit back my tongue, smile and say
“Fine and dandy”
“I’m okay”

Just like the old song
I guess I am
The great pretender.
