Hey Future Self,
Congratulations for making it!
Take a breath. Look down at your two feet. Where are they right now? Quite a journey, was it? Look around . Can you fell the love? Isn’t she great? and that kid, better be looking like his mom.
You are finally free and the world you see is a little bit brighter, a little bit lighter and holds less permanence than mine does, at times. Ooopsy! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not writing this letter because I’m sad or anything. It’s just that it hasn’t been always rainbows and butterflies lately. I feel like I need some lift. Right now, your life is one giant crossroads. It’s exciting. It’s frustrating. It’s temporary but more importantly it’s full of hope.
The world ain’t always unanimous in a lot of things. Some say wait for it, and there are some who’d push you to go after it. One meme says one thing, another says the other. And oh boy, it’s a struggle. But that’s a good thing. I get to make choices on what to believe and what not. The key there is ‘I’ and not anyone else is making the choices and i’m hopeful I’m making the right ones for you.
I hope you will look back to me now and think, “You did okay, kid.. Seriously,Not bad.”. I hope you’re proud of me. I hope you understand and forgive me for the mistakes I am making and about to make and I hope you remember me most for my intentions and how hard I am trying, because I am. I’m trying so hard. Some days I feel as though I just float through the air as if on wings of the clouds. And other days I just question everything; the heaviness ultimately bearing down so I feel its weight.
I’m still pushing through, though. I want you to be the most amazing person you can be, so I’m doing everything I can to help that process. I choose to work toward you, and by taking responsibility for my life. I am going to leap into the unknown and completely follow my heart. I am going to become the person you know I can be. No regrets.
You smile because you see that I get it, that the choices I make today affect you and your daily life in the future. You see that I am showing up and doing the best I can. You see that what may feel like not enough, even a failure, for me is more than enough in your eyes. You are proud and honored to have been me.
I know that you’re so proud of me for learning these lessons, for rolling up my sleeves and doing the work on myself that’s required; for getting into the trenches of my own life to prepare me for my next chapter. You’re oozing with awareness and you see that I am getting it. Day by day, I am trying, and I am learning. I am a work in progress.
I’m sure you’ve got a lot going on right now, and that’s good. Just don’t lose track of what’s important, what’s worth making time for. Spend time with people you love; That’s first and foremost, always. Make some plans. Get outside, even when the couch is calling. Trust that things will work out, or change them if you don’t like the charted course. Eat good food. See live music. Travel abroad. The kid? Raise him right. Spend time with him. Teach him how to shake someone’s hand properly. Tell him stories. Tell others’ stories. Tell him how you met his awesome mom. And oh, the mom! Keep her as she’s the best I could ever find. Listen. Set goals, both lofty and reasonable. Those hard earned money? Spend it on things you love. Money’s just a number. It comes and it goes. Love, my dear friend, is the true currency.
ENJOY IT! ALL OF IT! BE THANKFUL.
Stay stoked,
